Botanical Description

Diospyros crassinervis, commonly called Feather Bed, is a dense evergreen shrub or small tree typically growing 6-20 feet (2-6 m) tall. 

Growth Form 
  • Compact, rounded crown 
  • Often multi-stemmed 
  • Slow-growing 
  • Forms thick foliage in limestone environments 
  • Bark Dark gray to brown 
  • Smooth when young, becoming slightly rough with age 
  • Wood is hard and dense 
Leaves 
  • Alternate 
  • Oval 
  • Thick and leathery 1-3 inches long 
  • Dark glossy green above 
  • Paler green to yellow beneath 
  • Prominent veins (the species name crassinervis means, thick-nerved) 
  • The leaves are tough and adapted to dry, rocky soils. 
Flowers 
  • Small, creamy white to pale green 
  • Inconspicuous 
  • Usually borne singly or in small clusters 
  • Plants may be male or female (dioecious) 
Fruit 
  • Small, round berry yellow berry turning dark purple or black when ripe 
  • Contains several seeds 

Habitat

Grows in Dry Broadleaf Evergreen Formation: Forests and Shrublands (coppice/scrublands).

Distribution 

Occurs throughout the Lucayan Archipelago as well as Cuba and Hispaniola.

Ecological Importance

  • Drought-hardy limestone palm; supports native insects and provides nesting/perching habitat.

Cultural Notes

  • Used medicinally in strengthening teas for male virility and additionally used for gastrointestinal issues to induce vomiting.

  • Wood is dense and strong.
